Fergus looks to repeat at “The Cap Cana Championship”
When he returns to the spectacular turquoise waters and the emerald fairways of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Punta Espada Golf Club for the 2010 Cap Cana Championship March 22-28, Fergus has one thing in mind – repeating his title of 2009.
The 55-year-old from Sugar Land, Texas thinks that's a possibility.
“I'm playing well, my game is as good as it has ever been, and my attitude is good,” Fergus said.
“I've been working hard and we'll see what happens. It's a great spot, a wonderful place to go, and I'm anxious to get back there.”
Fergus will be among 78 Champions Tour players making a third visit to the resort and his return will rekindle memories of his one-shot victory over Andy Bean and Mark O'Meara.
After all when you hole a 95-yard wedge shot for eagle at the next-to-last hole to jump into the lead, it makes for pleasant times.
“I kind of got on a roll on the back nine,” Fergus said, “and made some birdies and moved up the leader board. I felt if I could birdie 17, I could be tied going to 18.”
Fergus' hole-out sent his plan one better than expected and left him with a big task ahead at 18, particularly since he made double bogey there during the second round.
“I said to myself, ‘Whoa, you've got to calm down,'” Fergus remembered. “Making the eagle was fun. Everybody was jumping around, but I had to put my mind back on the final hole, the hardest hole on the golf course. I could have gotten caught up in the moment.”
Fergus parred the final hole for a 67, capping a four-stroke comeback. With previous rounds of 68 his 13-under-par 203 total was the best of the field.
He made one eagle, 19 birdies, 27 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey to win the $315,000 first place check.
“Winning is always special,” Fergus said of his Cap Cana Championship, “and winning twice in four weeks was even better.”
Fergus also won the rain-shortened Regions Charity Classic in Birmingham, Alabama and went on to win more than $1 million for the second time in his Champions Tour career.
Tournament director Efren Garcia-Estrada believes the 2010 event will be the best yet. “The Cap Cana Championship promises to be another great success and will be the biggest sporting and social event of the year in the Dominican Republic,” he said. “We had two great champions, Mark Wiebe and Keith Fergus, and expect another dramatic finish with quality players such as 2009 Charles Schwab Cup winner and player of the year Bernhard Langer, John Cook, Nick Price, Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, Hal Sutton, Tom Kite and crowd favorite Eduardo Romero already committed to the tournament.”
