Cap Cana’s Littoral Sea Turtles Protection Program

Females come out to the beaches, excavate to make their nests and lay their eggs. The majority of females spawn more than once during one season and it is believed that several species nest in the same beaches where they were born.

All Sea Turtles found in the Dominican Republic’s littoral are in the endangered species red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Of the four species present in our country, The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), The Short Peak Carey (Caretta caretta), The Tinglar (Dermochelys coriacea) and the Carey Sea Turtle (Eretmachelys imbricada), this last one has moved on to the critical threat category, which means that in the last 10 years its population has decreased from an 80% to a 90%. It is of vital importance to take action in order to give this species a chance to survive.

PROGRAM’S OBJECTIVES:
•    Protect Sea Turtles as well as their eggs and babies along the Cap Cana coastline.
•    Eliminate or reduce all possible interference to the nesting conduct of the Turtles.
•    Execute educational activities with the people who benefit from and enjoy our beaches, on the conservation of the Sea Turtles.

HOW CAN WE HELP?
•    Identifying the prints left by the females.
•    In the case of spotting any nest or witnessing a spawning, this must be communicated immediately to Cap Cana’s Environmental Protection Department.
•    Remove all objects from the Beach before the night time.
•    Use low intensity lights.
•    Carefully realize all Beach cleaning works

PROTECTION AREAS:

•     Caletón Beach
•     Juanillo Beach

We would like to highlight that as part of the preventive measures already taken by Cap Cana, vigilance on protection areas has been reinforced and soon educational and awareness Workshops y on beach security and cleanliness will commence.
